Independence College of Cosmetology was founded in 1960 and has continually been an active part of the local business community. Independence College of Cosmetology is located in a state-of-the-art facility with ample parking (including handicapped) which is free for students and clients. It is located in historical Independence, Missouri, which is easily reached by way of local freeways and main thoroughfares. The College has met and exceeded the needs and desires of the beauty salons in the community by educating students to be proficient in areas that surpass simple licensure.

Our mission is to enhance the growth and skills of our profession by providing Pivot Point International training as the basis of the hairdressing curriculum. Pivot Point is the most widely used and accepted cosmetology training system in the World. The training also includes People Skills that can lead to a higher level of customer satisfaction. 

Our mission is to provide the CIDESCO training curriculum to our Esthetic students so that they can work worldwide. CIDESCO is the international organization for estheticians that study skin care, body care and make-up. Independence College of Cosmetology is the second CIDESCO school in the United States. We have met all the requirements of the International organization in order to have that privilege.

Our Mission is to provide a world class quality education, provide a higher level of customer satisfaction, promote pride, self-esteem and motivation, provide the skills and knowledge to pass the State Board exam, and prepare the student for job readiness around the world.

About us

The College was founded by Don and Leila Cohoon and is now directed by their daughter, Linda Clifford, who started her career in 1972. The College enjoys a national, as well as international, reputation for quality education and plays an active part in the local business community. Courses are offered in Esthetics, Basic Cosmetology (which includes Nails), and Instructor Training. Interested students, friends and/or family members are invited to tour the College Tuesday - Saturday, 8:30 - 4:30, by making an appointment.

Programs

Basic Cosmetology
Course #1 - 1,500 Hours


This course teaches the student to perform any standard cosmetology service required in the beauty salon. The curriculum is based on the Pivot Point training system and our own experience since opening the college in 1960. The knowledge and skills will prepare the student for work as a hairstylist, salon manager, hair colorist, salon owner, product demonstrator, manicurist, or pedicurist.

This course can be completed in ten months with perfect attendance. A new class starts every seven weeks with previous classes rotating into the next segment of training.

Skin Care (Esthetics)
Course #2 - 1,500 Hours


CIDESCO is the international organization for estheticians that study skin care and make-up. Independence College of Cosmetology is the second CIDESCO school in the United States. We have met all the requirements of the international organization to be qualified and approved for this honor.

The Esthetics program is a complete basic course in the scientific method of skin care for the entire body. This course teaches the student to analyze and treat various skin problems through the use of massages, machines, and products. The student will be familiar with make-up techniques, hair removal techniques and the business practices of a skin care operation. The student will learn about aromatherapy, body wraps, body treatments and reflexology. The student will also learn microdermabrasion and cellulite treatments.

Students who complete this course will be able to perform any standard esthetics service required in the beauty salon or spa. The knowledge and skills will prepare the student for work as an esthetician, salon or spa manager, salon or spa owner or product demonstrator.

This course can be completed in ten months with perfect attendance. A new class starts every seven weeks with previous classes rotating into the next segment of training.

Instructor Training
Course #3 - 600 Hours


Time in this course is spent learning the technical skills of teaching cosmetology subjects. This includes lesson planning, teaching principals, psychology, motivation, classroom training and practice teaching. The Instructor Trainee will be able to teach any phase of cosmetology in cosmetology schools and will be familiar with procedures for creating lesson plans and curriculums.

This course can be completed in four months with perfect attendance. A new class starts every seven weeks. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
