In my last post, I talked about cosmetology school as a fabulous alternative to a four-year college. For some people, it is. But beauty school also can be an addition to a college education. After you have your liberal arts degree and know lots about the world, you can go on to take specialized training in hair, esthetics or nails—and work in the field of your passion.

At the Aveda Fredric’s Institutes in Cincinnati and Indianapolis, the majority of students have some college, and many are graduates of four-year universities, according to school president Frederic Holzberger. He says his schools have had people enroll who already had master’s degrees and even a law degree.

No education is a waste of time or money. If you’re in college or believe that you’d enjoy that experience, don’t think that it closes any other doors. You always can follow up that education with a cosmetology school degree. When you work in a great salon or spa, your clients will tend to be highly educated, well-traveled and interested in a variety of topics. You’ll have a lot in common with them if you have a broad educational background. Sometimes people just don’t settle on what they want to do until they’ve taken classes in other disciplines. If you love hair, nails or skin care, keep a beauty career in mind even if you start off on another path. You’ll be in good company.
