If you had a favorite high school teacher or college professor, you know how much that person can influence you, inspire you and point you in the right direction. The educators you meet in beauty school can have an even greater impact on your life, because they're members of your future profession. One day you may want to be a cosmetology educator yourself, so this teacher could also turn out to be a role model.

That's why I'd advise you to learn everything you can about the faculty of the schools on your short list before making a final decision about where to enroll. As you visit each school, ask random students what they think about their instructors. If the school permits you to sit in on a class, ask the owner to recommend which teacher or teachers to observe.

A good cosmetology school instructor can be not only a mentor but also an excellent resource for a first job. Salon owners often consult with school personnel to identify students who are motivated to work hard and soak up as much education as they can, because those will be the salon's best employees. Getting top grades never hurts, of course, but an enthusiastic faculty recommendation can be equally valuable for you to attach to your applications.
