Beauty School Diploma Becomes Global Ticket
Published: May 02, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
With today’s society so mobile, people trained in one country frequently take their education and move on. This certainly is true for graduates of
beauty school
, whose skills are valued in any corner of the world that has women, hair and some level of freedom. Australia has all of that plus English as the national language, and the website lifeinaustralia.wordpress.com was
increasingly having
cosmetology career
professionals from abroad searching the site to learn about the Australian salon business.
The website responded: “On the hard side, the hours are long and social life is severely hit because of the tiredness that comes from standing on one’s feet for several hours a day. Tough job really! However, interaction with interesting people during the course of work makes the profession quite attractive and one feels at home even at the workplace. Besides, the profession provides endless opportunities for expression of one’s creativity, and there are several strands that one can take and specialize in. Competition is also very intense in this industry. However, due to increase in fashion awareness and growth in the fashion industry, there are endless opportunities for creative and dedicated professionals in this line. As far as income or wages are concerned, it is a well-paid profession. In big cities like Melbourne and Australia, a mediocre professional can expect to earn around 16 to 20 Australian Dollars per hour.” (Australian and U.S. dollars are roughly equivalent.)
Your
cosmetology career
can take you to the other side of the world!

Is A Cosmetology Career Your “Calling”?
Published: April 28, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
David Wagner, a hairdresser-hero whose name you may hear as you progress in your
cosmetology career
, owns about ten Juut Salonspas, which were the original Aveda Concept salons. His partnership with Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher, who
by the way qualifies as another hair icon, began when David attended what was then the Horst Education Center and is now the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis. So you never know the contacts you can make at
beauty school
!
I had the pleasure to meet David some years back, not long after he’d dropped the title of hairdresser and began introducing himself as a “daymaker.” He explained that, just by being a professional hairdresser, he makes people’s days! He even wrote a book called Life As a Daymaker. Recently I came across something David said that has really stuck with me: “Some people are highly talented but lack passion for their work. When you’re talented and don’t have passion, that’s called a job. When you’re passionate but not talented, that’s a hobby. When you’re both talented and passionate about the work you do, that’s a calling.”
David left out one thing, though. To support the talent, you need the skills, the education. In fact, you may not even be sure you have either talent or passion until you attend
beauty school
classes. It’s a great way to find out! David went on to say that at his salons, they try to hire only people who have the calling. Could that possibly describe you?

Paris Hilton Can’t Hold a Candle to Cosmetology Career Icons
Published: April 24, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
Once you get into
beauty school
, you’ll start hearing about people who aren’t famous the way Paris Hilton is famous, but who are very well-known and respected among professionals who have a
cosmetology career
. Typically, these “h
eroes” start off as very talented hairdressers who go on to become educators, salon owners, trade show speakers, consultants, product manufacturers or a combination of all that until they finally reach icon status.
I’d have to say that Vidal Sassoon still is the most famous hairdresser. With a product line, worldwide salons and chain of schools, the Sassoon brand reaches far beyond the hair community into the public arena. That proves how influential a hairdresser can become. It’s been 45 years since Sassoon’s career catapulted on the strength of his innovative bob-cutting methods. It was Sassoon’s looks that first had stylists shunning hair curlers in favor of the newly invented blowdryers of the late 1960s.
But Sassoon is far from the only fame-name you’ll hear perhaps in
beauty school
, but certainly once you begin working in salons. There are many hair design educators whose appearances at shows and in classes make for a hot ticket. One of those people is David Wagner. He founded the original Aveda Concept salons, called Juut Salonspa, and he’s a popular speaker and consultant in the industry. Wagner said something recently that I really want to share with you, so check back for my next post and I’ll tell you all about it.

And Now a Few Words From a Beauty School Student
Published: April 20, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
I enjoy finding out why people elect to go to
beauty school
. I recently came across an explanation by Jocelyn Price, who was asked that very question while she was a student at
Kohler Academy
. I think a lot of cosmetologists and
cosmetology school students
would agree with what Jocelyn had to say.
“I have chosen beauty because it is the perfect way to change the world, one person at a time, and it completes the person I am,” she explained. “It has taught me to dream big, because there are endless possibilities to be successful in my personal and professional life. Beauty has chosen me because I understand its true meaning, and I’ve enlisted to spread the word everywhere I go.”
I think this message is shared by lots of people who graduate from
beauty school
because of the three themes it presents:
1) The beauty profession gives you the chance to truly make a difference in people’s lives.
2) This career can be as huge as you decide for yourself. The term “endless possibilities” is not an exaggeration, because a cosmetology license can take you in so many different directions, each with sky’s-the-limit potential.
3) Once you’re in it, you want to tell the world what a great gig it is, to open other creative people’s minds to the possibility of choosing beauty as a career and to attract an ongoing pool of talented people to keep the industry fresh.

Prom, Graduation Provide Good Prep for Beauty School
Published: April 16, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
So much in daily life can help to prepare you for
beauty school
, but this season especially holds valuable sources of inspiration. I'm not referring to spring's blossoms and dew, although I'll give nature its due another time. I'm talking about
prom and graduation. These April/May traditions will provide a lot of fun and opportunity for you when you've completed
hair style school
.
Until then, you may be on the receiving end of prom and graduation hair services. If you're in high school, you may be planning to go to prom this year and maybe graduate as well. Or you may have friends or relatives preparing for those once-in-a-lifetime days. If you find yourself in the salon either primping yourself or accompanying someone else, pay close attention as individuals or groups of girls and guys, too, come in not just to look good but to enjoy the process.
There will be so much going on! You'll observe the creation of updo's, sleek hair, wavy styles and looks supported by hair extensions. Everyone needs a manicure, many girls will want a pedicure and some may ask for facials, too. If the salon doesn't employ a makeup artist, often the stylist will do the girls' makeup. The stylists must work quickly yet be careful not to disappoint clients on their special day. After you learn how to do all of this
beauty school
, you'll play a huge role in making people's memories (and photos!) the most special that they can be.

Take a Cosmetology School Instructor to Lunch
Published: April 13, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
The next Very Impo
rtant Person in your life is likely to be a
cosmetology school
instructor. If you had a favorite high school teacher or college professor, you know how much that person can influence you, inspire you and point you in the right direction. The educators you meet in
beauty school
can have an even greater impact on your life, because they're members of your future profession. One day you may want to be a cosmetology educator yourself, so this teacher could also turn out to be a role model.
That's why I'd advise you to learn everything you can about the faculty of the schools on your short list before making a final decision about where to enroll. As you visit each school, ask random students what they think about their instructors. If the school permits you to sit in on a class, ask the owner to recommend which teacher or teachers to observe.
A good
cosmetology school
instructor can be not only a mentor but also an excellent resource for a first job. Salon owners often consult with school personnel to identify students who are motivated to work hard and soak up as much education as they can, because those will be the salon's best employees. Getting top grades never hurts, of course, but an enthusiastic faculty recommendation can be equally valuable for you to attach to your applications.

After Massage Therapy School, You’ll Never Rub People the Wrong Way
Published: April 09, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
After I touched on the topic of maternity massage in my last post, I started thinking about the huge impact professional massage therapists can have on their clients. This can be such a rewarding profession. If you have strong hands and a heart that wants to give people the gift of relaxation and, in some cases, nonsurgical relief from pain, you might want to enroll in
massage therapy school
or choose a general
cosmetology school
that includes courses in massage.
I don’t have a crystal ball, but I doubt that people will become less stressed in the future. If anything, life just keeps getting more and more stressful. Today people of all ages and in all walks of life depend on their weekly massage to help relieve the stress from a busy workday, a tough schedule of midterm exams or a routine of chasing kids around the neighborhood.
The medical benefits of massage are even more vital to many people. Your
massage therapy school
training can provide the skills to improve a client’s circulation, flexibility, digestion, muscle strength and more. Your work truly can give people a higher quality of life. Check back, because in a future blog I’ll get specific about the medical conditions that lead doctors to recommend massage therapy. But the cool thing about this career is that you can work in either a medical facility along with doctors and nurses or in a salon/spa with estheticians and hairdressers. You can even do both.

Have a Specialized Interest for Your Cosmetology Career? Go For It!
Published: April 06, 2008
by Rosanne Ullman
Here at
beautyschooladvisor.com
, we tell you how varied a career you can have after
beauty school
: work in a salon one day, on the set of a
local TV station the next and backstage at a charity fashion show over the weekend. If you get fully licensed, you can be a hairdresser, nail tech and esthetician. But there’s another side to that coin. If you choose, you can shape a deep but extremely narrow
cosmetology career
.
For example, if you become a massage therapist, you may find that you love working with pregnant clients, who are stressed but excited as they prepare for motherhood. One thing they can really use is a massage! For the best experience, they should go to a massage therapist who understands that they are most comfortable lying on their side and knows to be extra careful about the blood clots that can form in the legs during pregnancy. A technician who specializes in maternity massage is a great choice for them.
Other market niches that offer opportunities include children, teens, men, older adults, ethnic clients, athletes, chemotherapy patients and other victims of hair loss and hair thinning, special needs kids or adults, sufferers of various skin diseases and a long list of service specialties like perming or waxing. I once interviewed a cosmetologist who made huge money from the unique service of threading eyebrows! Your
cosmetology career
will zoom when you follow your passions, whether they’re broadly drawn or restricted to a pinpoint.
